Turbo.264 and EyeTV 250 Plus Hardware Encoding
Solution
Both the EyeTV 250 Plus and the Turbo.264 encoder come equipped with on-board hardware encoding capabilities, however the functions of these devices are quite different. This includes both the Turbo.264 and the Turbo.264 HD.
The EyeTV 250 Plus contains hardware encoders that offer excellent performance and recording quality. Because the processor intensive MPEG encoding is done in the hardware, you can use an older Macintosh to record high quality programming. This device can only be used to encode video as it is digitized and imported into your Mac.
This device cannot be used to accelerate the exports of your videos - this is the role of the Turbo.264 encoder. The Turbo essentially acts as a second (or third) processor for your Mac, focusing itself entirely on exporting to the H.264 format and freeing your Mac to continue multitasking without delay.
Both the Turbo.264 encoder and the EyeTV 250 Plus may be used simultaneously, but neither is required in order to use the other. This combination allows for the maximum amount of hardware encoding, without any overlap.
