Getting Started with EyeTV for iPhone and iPad
Getting Started with EyeTV for iPhone and iPad
Solution
Sending Live TV and recordings from your Mac to your iPhone or iPad involves a few simple steps.
Step 1: Purchase EyeTV Hardware and Software
First, be aware that
EyeTV
software only runs on Macs - it does not run on Windows.
You must have a Mac with
EyeTV
software and hardware, to act as your "server" that will send video to your
iPad
or
iPhone
.
In many retailers you can find EyeTV hardware, like
EyeTV Hybrid, EyeTV HD
or
EyeTV DTT Deluxe
- the selection varies depending on your country.
When you purchase EyeTV hardware, a copy of EyeTV software for your Mac is included in the box. Currently,
EyeTV 3
software is distributed with EyeTV hardware.
If you already have other capture hardware that can work with EyeTV software on your Mac, then you can purchase
EyeTV 3
software separately from the
Elgato Online Store
.
If you already have older
EyeTV 2
software, you can upgrade to
EyeTV 3
via the
Elgato Online Store
, at a discounted price.
Step 2: Setup your Mac to use EyeTV
Depending on what EyeTV hardware you purchased, the
EyeTV 3
software
Setup Assistant
will talk you through the necessary steps to set everything up.
What is true for every EyeTV hardware device is that it has to be connected to a separate video source, that you provide.
Some examples of video sources are:
• Antenna/Aerial
• Cable TV
• Satellite TV
• VCR
• Game Console
You will need to purchase an antenna, rent cable or satellite service, or otherwise bring an active video source to EyeTV.
Each EyeTV device has different capabilities, so make sure your EyeTV hardware can use your video source of choice. For example, if you have a cable box and satellite receiver, and you live in the United States or Canada, then
EyeTV HD
is an excellent choice - it can connect to your video source, and control it to change channels using IR signals.
Any EyeTV compatible device ever made can work with
EyeTV 3
, and send video to
EyeTV for iPad / iPhone
.
Step 3: Connect EyeTV to a Network
You will need to connect your Mac to a network (usually a home network), using
Ethernet, Wi-Fi
, or both.
In this way,
EyeTV
will be able to send data to your
iPad
or
iPhone
, via a
Wi-Fi
connection.
Step 4: Purchase EyeTV from the iTunes App Store
The
EyeTV
app is Universal - you only need to buy it once, and it will have a different interface depending on if you are using it on an
iPhone
or
iPad
.
You can install your single copy on multiple devices, as per Apple's policies.
After you purchase it, install it on your
iPhone
or
iPad
via
iTunes
, or the
App Store
on your device.
Step 5: Connect to EyeTV on your Mac using EyeTV for iPhone or iPad
Visit the
iPhone
section of the
EyeTV Preferences
, and turn on
Enable access from EyeTV for iPhone/iPad
.
If you would like to use
EyeTV for iPad
outside of your home network, then you should sign up for an
My EyeTV
account. See this article for more information:
How do I use My EyeTV
When you launch
EyeTV
on your
iPhone
or
iPad
, you will see the name of your Mac.
If you have multiple
EyeTV
installations on your home network, then they may all show up, depending on your
iPhone Preferences
setup for each.
Those clients come from three locations
1)
Local Network
- A Bonjour symbol with three interlocking loops is used for any Macs running EyeTV on your local network. This is the same list as appears in the Shared section of the EyeTV Programs window. No further configuration is necessary — click on the Mac that you would like to connect.
2)
My EyeTV
- A monitor symbol is used for Macs found by My EyeTV. They represent an IP address stored in your Elgato account, associated with each Mac that's signed into My EyeTV (via the iPhone section of the EyeTV Preferences).
3)
Add EyeTV
- A wireless network symbol is used for any Mac that you'd added manually, by typing in a specific IP address.
Once you log in to your Mac via the
EyeTV for iPad / iPhone
app, you'll see a main menu on the top left that includes 4 sections:
1)
Live TV
- Watch Live TV via an EyeTV compatible hardware device that is connected to your Mac.
2)
Recordings
- Watch completed recordings on your Mac, after they are prepared for iPhone/iPad Access.
3)
Schedules
- View and create scheduled recordings that will happen on your Mac, now or in the future.
4)
Guide
- Browse your Program Guide, and select shows to record.
Step 6: Learning More about EyeTV for iPhone / iPad

In Your Local Network:

EyeTV for iPhone/iPad
or

in your local network.

From Outside Your Local Network:
When outside your local network, the free My EyeTV service can automatically connect the EyeTV app to your Mac back home, as long as your internet router supports UPnP or NAT-PMP protocols (the same protocols used by Apple’s “Back to My Mac” feature.) If your router does not support those protocols, you will need to manually configure it to forward port 2170.
