 Can I use any USB power adapter or USB port to power Elgato Game Capture HD?
Solution Usually, Elgato Game Capture HD will get power from your Mac or PC, via the USB cable that also transmits video data.

However, you can also turn off your computer, and use an USB power adapter with Elgato Game Capture HD.

Plug that adapter into a wall outlet to supply power to Elgato Game Capture HD via an USB cable.

Furthermore, Elgato Game Capture HD is a standard USB 2.0 device, so it can receive power from any standard USB port that provides power.


Compatible USB Power Adapters


There are many types of USB power adapters, and most will work with Elgato Game Capture HD.

For the example, the type of USB power adapter that comes with an iPhone or iPad will work.  

USB power adapters from other vendors will also work.  Any adapter that provides at least 2.5W should be fine.


Setup Details


1) Plug the USB cable into Elgato Game Capture HD

2) Plug the other end of the USB cable into the USB power adapter

3) Plug the USB power adapter into the power socket

4) Elgato Game Capture will automatically turn on, and start to process video


Other USB Power Options


You can also power your Elgato Game Capture HD via other USB ports, including:

• PlayStation 3 USB ports

• Xbox 360 USB ports

• Self-Powered USB hub ports (the hub must get power from a power outlet)

Elgato Game Capture HD is a standard USB 2.0 device, so it can receive power from any standard USB port that provides power.


USB Power Adapters or USB Ports are for Pass-Through Video Only


If you are using an USB power adapter with Elgato Game Capture HD, or an USB port that is not on your computer, then you will not be able to record any video.  You will only be able to pass-through video from your game console to your TV set.

If you want to record video, then remove the USB cable from the USB power adapter, and connect it to an USB port on your computer.
